Flight Training

American Airlines provides world-class training through its state-of-the-art training centers located primarily at its flagship facilities in Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). New hire pilots can expect to undergo a highly structured, comprehensive training program that includes initial ground school, systems training, simulator sessions, and line-oriented flight training.

Training begins with Indoctrination and systems classes, followed by full-motion simulator time specific to the assigned fleet. American Airlines operates a modern fleet that includes Airbus A320 family aircraft, Boeing 737-800s, 777s, and 787 Dreamliners, offering new pilots exposure to some of the most advanced flight decks in commercial aviation.

American maintains a strong culture of professionalism, standardization, and safety. The airline uses evidence-based training (EBT) and advanced recurrent programs to continuously develop pilot proficiency throughout their careers.

With the largest pilot group in the world and one of the most diversified fleets, American offers career progression opportunities through a well-established seniority system. From narrowbody to widebody, domestic to international, pilots at American are trained to lead the industry standard.

Hiring

  • Hiring Resumption in August 2025: American Airlines paused pilot hiring for the latter half of 2024 but plans to restart hiring in late August 2025, with a focus on fulfilling flow agreements from regional partners like Envoy Air, PSA Airlines, and Piedmont Airlines.
  • Hiring Target for 2025: The airline has a stated goal of hiring approximately 1,500 pilots in 2025 to address significant retirements (over 1,260 pilots expected to reach mandatory retirement age in the next 18 months) and align with capacity needs. As of May 2025, 568 pilots have been hired.
  • Current Status: American is currently hiring pilots from its existing pool of candidates with Conditional Job Offers (CJOs) but is not accepting new applications from the general public. The first new-hire class is scheduled for January 8, 2025.
  • Flow Agreements Priority: Hiring will prioritize pilots from American’s wholly-owned regional airlines (Envoy, PSA, Piedmont) through flow-through programs, which provide a direct path to mainline positions. Aspiring pilots should consider joining these regionals to increase chances of transitioning to American.
  • Pilot Requirements:
    • Valid FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with multi-engine rating.
    • Minimum 1,500 hours total flight time (1,000 hours of Part 121 experience may be considered).

    • Minimum age of 23; high school diploma or GED required, college degree preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills and decision-making ability.
    • Vision corrected to 20/20 (distance) and 20/40 (near) in each eye.
